Brief Comments on Riyaadh al-Saaliheen #103

The sickness of being pretentious:
(Behaving or speaking in such a manner as to create a false appearance of great importance or distinction to attract others)

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Asmaa’ رضي الله عنها reported: A woman came to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: I have a co-wife. Is there any harm for me if I give her the false impression of getting something from my husband which he has not in fact given me? The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The one who creates a false impression of receiving what one has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood.
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5219) and Saheeh Muslim (5311, 5312)]

It was narrated that Asmaa’ bint Yazeed رضي الله عنها said: Some food was brought to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and it was offered to us. We said: ‘We do not have any appetite for it.’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Do not combine hunger and lies.
[Sunan Ibn Maajah (3298) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

It is narrated from Asmaa’ bint Yazeed رضي الله عنها that she said (regarding the marriage of `Aaishah رضي الله عنها): I had prepared `Aaishah for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and came to him and called him (to come in). He صلى الله عليه وسلم came and sat next to `Aaishah. A container of milk was brought and he صلى الله عليه وسلم drank from it and pass it to her (`Aaishah). She lowered her head out of shyness.

Asmaa’ further said: I rebuked her and said to her: Take it from the hands of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Asmaa’ said: She took it and drank a little from it. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then said to her: Pass it on to your friends.

Asmaa’ said: I said: O Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم! Rather you take it (from her) and drink from it and then pass it on to me with your own hands. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took it, drank from it (again) and passed it to me.

She said: I sat down on my knees and began rotating the cup so that I can reach the spot from where the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had drank. She then said to the other ladies around her: Pass this around. They said: “We have no appetite for it.” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Do not combine hunger and lies. (She said to him): Do you abstain from saying: We have no appetite? I (Asmaa’) said: O my mother! (A statement of surprise) I will not repeat it again.
[Musnad of Imaam Ahmad (27560, 27591) and its chain is "Dha`eef"]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen:
(There are people who hoard wealth) and if you see them, you will say: They are the poorest of people. And they will be disturbing people by asking (begging) them. Then there are people, who will not have anything, but they will beg others so that they can furnish their houses like how the rich people do; and so that they can buy luxurious cars like the affluent, and so that they can dress up like the rich. This is foolishness. The one who creates a false impression of receiving what one has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood.

Be content with what Allaah تعالى has given you. If you are poor, then limit yourself within your means; and if you are rich, then you live according to your means. But it is wrong when you imitate the affluent (while you are poor) and you say: I want to have a luxurious car and a spacious and furnished house, and then you go around begging people – either begging them directly before you purchase these things or begging them after you have purchased them and then say to the people: (Help me), I have debts to repay. This is all wrong.

Live according to your means, and according to what your Lord has provided you with. Beseech your Lord to provide you with vast sustenance from Himself and not to restrain it for you – the sustenance which will make you sufficient (and not in need of asking from people).

We ask Allaah for our success and safety.
[Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (3/99)]

Al-Suyootee commented on the Hadeeth of Sunan Ibn Maajah:
Do not combine…, means: your refusal to eat the food by saying that you have no appetite while you are still hungry; you have combined between hunger and lies! This is similar to the saying of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: The one who creates a false impression of receiving what one has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood.

What is apparent from this Hadeeth is that it is a warning to them (the ladies) against telling lies, because in this situation there are two losses combined – loss in the Deen (religion) and the Dunya (worldly life).
[Sharh Sunan Ibn Maajah by al-Suyootee (1/237)]
