Praying at the earliest

Book of Prayer Times: Chapter: ‘Prayers at fixed hours have been prescribed’

Narrated Ibn Shihaab: Once `Umar bin `Abdul `Azeez delayed the prayer and `Urwah bin Az-Zubair went to him and said: Once in Koofah (`Iraaq), Al-Mugheerah bin Shu`bah delayed his prayers and Abi Mas`ood Al-Ansaaree went to him and said: O Mugheerah! What is this? Don't you know that once Jibreel (Gabriel) came and offered the prayer (Fajr prayer) and Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed too; then he prayed again (Dhuhr prayer) and so did Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم; and again he prayed (`Asr prayer) and Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم did the same; again he prayed (Maghrib-prayer) and so did Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم; and again prayed (`Ishaa’ prayer) and so did Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم and (Jibreel) said: “I was ordered to do so (to demonstrate the prayers prescribed to you).” `Umar (bin `Abdul `Azeez) said to `Urwah: “Be sure of what you say. Did Jibreel lead Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم at the stated times of the prayers? `Urwah replied: Bashir bin Abi Mas`ood narrated like this on the authority of his father. [1]

[1] In this (narration) there is evidence for the following:

a. It is necessary upon the Imaams of the Masaajid and the rulers to observe and maintain the prayer in its stated time and to offer them at the earliest (i.e. at the beginning of its time).

b. Banu Umayyah (in their reign) used to delay the prayer (i.e. pray near the end of its time).

c. `Umar bin `Abdul `Azeez was one of the leaders of Banu Umayyah and he was the governor of Madeenah; and probably he delayed the prayer and when he came to know the truth, adhered to it.

d. And from the benefit of this Hadeeth is that the scholars should remind the rulers (and correct them).
