Hadeeth: Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and poverty

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

*Narrated `Abdullaah ibn Mughaffal رضي الله عنه: A man said to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: By Allaah, O Messenger of Allaah, I do love you. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Look, what you are saying?” The man said: By Allaah, I love you, and repeated this sentence thrice. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If you really love me, then, be prepared for acute poverty; for extreme hardship rushes more rapidly towards a person, who loves me, than a flood flows towards its destination.”

[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2350) and he graded is as “Hasan Ghareeb”. Initially, this Hadeeth was graded as “Dha`eef” by Shaikh al-Albaanee, but later, after rechecking, he graded it as “Hasan” due to various supporting chains. This Hadeeth was also reported on the authority of Anas bin Maalik, Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree and Abu Dharr رضي الله عنهم with different wordings. See al-Saheehah (1586, 2827 and 2828)]

*Narrated Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه that he went to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: I love you O Ahl al-Bait. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “(By) Allaah!” He (Abu Dharr) said: “(By) Allaah!” He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Be prepared for acute poverty, for extreme hardship rushes more rapidly towards a person who loves us, than a flood which flows from top of a hill to the bottom.”

[Mustadrak al-Haakim (8020), and he graded it as “Saheeh as per the condition of the Shaykhain (al-Bukhaaree and Muslim).” And al-Dhahabee agreed with him. Shaikh al-Albaanee also graded it as “Saheeh” only in al-Saheehah (6/790)]
