Islaam between abandonment and extremism

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Apart from misunderstanding or misinterpreting the Texts (the Qur’aan and the Ahaadeeth), the causes for deviation in the Deen can be summed up to two Major reasons:

1. Extremism
2. Abandonment (negligence/leniency)

And both of these habits lead one to go against the teachings of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Both of these habits only cause harm to Islaam and Muslims.

1. The Extremists:

Being an extremist or overzealous makes a person to exceed the limits and then eventually it leads to disobedience and not properly follow the Sunnah. The biggest example is that of the Khawaarij. In order to have a “perfect society” they went into extremes and overburdened themselves and others with undue hardship to the point where one of them didn’t even believe in the justice of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (as mentioned in the Hadeeth reported in the Saheehain), nor in the justice of the Companions and they killed `Uthmaan, `Alee and the other Companions رضي الله عنهم; and in the present era they are still upon their evil methodology of revolting against the rulers and causing destruction amongst the Muslims and to the Muslims. And as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “and they would pass clean through their religion just as the arrow passes through the prey, and they would never come back to it.”

2. The Negligent:

Then there are those who are at the other end of the spectrum. People who are so lenient that the obligations of Islaam carry no weight with them and the prohibitions in Islaam are manipulated to suit their desires. An example is of those who make the unlawful such as music, adultery, intoxicants etc. as lawful, and those who abandon the prayers and give little importance to learning the religion. An example of such a group is the Soofees, who are lenient about the rules set by the Muhadditheen, and accept any narration, even if it is weak or fabricated, as long as it supports their beliefs. And they’ll reject a narration, even if it is authentic, if it goes against their beliefs. They give little importance to the matters of `Aqeedah. They care less if their actions are according to the Sunnah or if they are Bid`ah.

Allaah protect us all from falling into these two extremes; and that He guide us towards the Wasatiyyah (the middle path) and make us among the righteous.

What follows is a series of Ahaadeeth which warn against extremism and abandonment in Religion.

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#1

On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: “What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you [to do], do as much of it as you can. It was only their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their prophets that destroyed those who were before you.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (7288) and Saheeh Muslim (2388, 4355)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#2

Narrated Anas bin Maalik رضي الله عنه: Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم entered the Masjid and saw a rope hanging in between its two pillars. He said, “What is this rope?” The people said, “This rope is for Zainab who, when she feels tired, holds it (to keep standing for the prayer.)” The Prophet said, “Don't use it. Remove the rope. You should pray as long as you feel active, and when you get tired, sit down.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1150)]

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came while a woman was sitting with me. He said, “Who is she?” I replied, “She is so and so,” and told him about her (excessive) praying. He said disapprovingly, “Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity (without being overtaxed) as Allaah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allaah is that which is done regularly.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (43, 1151, 5862) and Saheeh Muslim (1308, 1314, 1965)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#3

Narrated `Abdullaah bin `Amr bin Al-`Aas رضي الله عنهما: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to me, “You fast daily all the year and pray every night all the night?” I replied in the affirmative. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “If you keep on doing this, your eyes will become weak and your body will get tired. He who fasts all the year is as he who did not fast at all. The fasting of three days (a month) will be equal to the tasting of the whole year.” I replied, “I have the power for more than this.” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Then fast like the fasting of David who used to fast on alternate days and would never flee from the battle field, on meeting the enemy.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1153, 3419) and Saheeh Muslim (1974, 1975)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#4

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم never fasted in any month more than in the month of Sha`baan. He used to say, “Do those deeds which you can do easily, as Allaah will not get tired (of giving rewards) till you get bored and tired (of performing religious deeds).” The most beloved prayer to the Prophet was the one that was done regularly (throughout the life) even if it were little. And whenever the Prophet offered a prayer he used to offer it regularly.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1970)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#5

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “The deeds of anyone of you will not save you (from the (Hell) Fire).” They said, “Even you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allaah's Apostle?” He said, “No, even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allaah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allaah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5673, 6463) and Saheeh Muslim (5041, 5042, 5044, 5045, 5046, 5047)]

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and receive good news because one’s good deeds will not make him enter Paradise.” They asked, “Even you, O Allaah's Apostle?” He said, “Even I, unless and until Allaah bestows His pardon and mercy on me.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (6467)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#6

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allaah's is the most regular and constant even though it were little.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (6464) and Saheeh Muslim (5048)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#7

Narrated Abu Burdah: That his father said: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم sent Mu`aadh and Abu Moosa to Yemen telling them: “Treat the people with ease and don’t be hard on them; give them glad tidings and don’t fill them with aversion.” [Saheeh al-Bukhari (3038, 4342, 4345, 6124, 7172) and Saheeh Muslim (3269)]

Narrated Anas bin Maalik رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Facilitate things to people (concerning religious matters), and do not make it hard for them and give them good tidings and do not make them run away (from Islam).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (69, 6125) and Saheeh Muslim (3270)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#8

On the authority of Ya`laa bin Umayyah: He said: “I said to `Umar bin al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه (about the verse): {There is no blame on you if you shorten the prayer if you fear that those who disbelieve will trouble you}. But the people are safe (now)”. He said: ‘I was wondering about that just as you are wondering. So, I asked the Prophet of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم about it. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ‘It is a charity which Allaah has granted you, so accept it.’’ [Saheeh Muslim (1114)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#9

Narrated Abu `Aamir or Abu Maalik Al-Ash`aree رضي الله عنهما: that he heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allaah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5588)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#10

Narrated Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه: Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Verily there would arise from my Ummah after me or soon after me a group (of people) who would recite the Qur’aan, but it would not go beyond their throats, and they would pass clean through their religion just as the arrow passes through the prey, and they would never come back to it. They would be the worst among the creation and the creatures.” [Saheeh Muslim (1782)]

Narrated Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree and Anas ibn Maalik رضي الله عنهما: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Soon there will appear disagreement and dissension in my people; there will be people who will be good in speech and bad in work. They recite the Qur’aan, but it does not pass their collar-bones. They will swerve from the religion as an arrow goes through the animal shot at. They will not return to it till the arrow comes back to its notch. They are worst of the people and animals. Happy is the one who kills them and they kill him. They call to the Book of Allaah, but they have nothing to do with it. He who fights against them will be nearer to Allaah than them (the rest of the people)”. The people asked: What is their sign? He replied: “They shave the head.” [Abu Dawood (4765) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#11

Narrated Jaabir ibn `Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما: The Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم came to us while we were reciting the Qur’aan, and there were among us Bedouins and the non-Arabs. He said: “Recite, all is well. In the near future there will appear people who will straighten it (the Qur’aan) as an arrow is straightened. They will recite it quickly and not slowly (or it means that they will get the reward in this world and not in the Hereafter).” [Abu Dawood (830) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee and also graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh Muqbil al-Waadi`ee in “al-Saheeh al-Musnad” (249) and “Saheeh Dalaail al-Nubuuwah” (588) and he said “it is “Saheeh” as per the condition of Imaam Muslim”]

Zaid bin Wahb Jahani reported and he was among the squadron which was under the command of `Alee رضي الله عنه and which set out (to curb the activities) of the Khwaarij. `Alee رضي الله عنه said: O people! I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: “There would arise from my ummah a people who would recite the Qur’aan, and your recital would seem insignificant as compared with their recital, your prayer as compared with their prayer, arid your fast, as compared with their fast. They would recite the Qur’aan thinking that it supports them, whereas it is evidence against them. Their prayer does not get beyond their collar bone; they would swerve through Islaam just as the arrow passes through the prey. If the squadron which is to encounter them were to know (what great boon) has been assured to them by their Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم they would completely rely upon this deed (alone and cease to do other good deeds), and their (that of the Khwaarij) distinctive mark is that there would be (among them) a person whose wrist would be without the arm, and the end of his wrist would be fleshy like the nipple of the breast on which there would be white hair.” (`Alee رضي الله عنه said): You would be marching towards Mu`aawiyah and the people of Syria and you would leave them behind among your children and your property (to do harm). By Allaah, I believe that these are the people (against whom you have been commanded to fight and get reward) for they have shed forbidden blood, and raided the animals of the people. So go forth in the name of Allaah (to fight against them). Salamah bin Kuhail mentioned that Zaid bin Wahb made me alight at every stage, till we crossed a bridge. `Abdullaah bin Wahb al-Rasibi was at the head of the Khwaarij when we encountered them. He (`Abdullaah) said to his army: Throw the spears and draw out your swords from their sheaths, for I fear that they would attack you as they attacked you on the day of Haroorah. They went back and threw their spears and drew out their swords, and people fought against them with spears and they were killed one after another. Only two persons were killed among the people (among the army led by `Alee) on that day. `Alee رضي الله عنه said: Find out from among them (the dead bodies of the Khwaarij) (the maimed). They searched but did not find him. `Alee رضي الله عنه then himself stood up and (walked) till he came to the people who had been killed one after another. He (`Alee) said: Search them to the last, and then (`Alee's companions) found him (the dead body of the maimed) near the earth. He (`Alee رضي الله عنه) then pronounced Allaahu-Akbar (Allaah is the Greatest) and then said, Allaah told the Truth and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم conveyed it. Then there stood before him `Abida Salmani who said: Commander of the Believers, by Allaah, besides Whom there is none worthy of worship (in truth) but He, (tell me) whether you heard this Hadeeth from the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم. He said: Yes, by Allaah, besides Whom there is none worthy of worship (in truth) but He. He asked him to take an oath thrice and he took the oath. [Saheeh Muslim (1780)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#12a

Narrated Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما: (in a long Hadeeth) that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Among the off-spring of this man will be some who will recite the Qur’aan but the Qur’aan will not reach beyond their throats (i.e. they will recite like parrots and will not understand it nor act on it), and they will renegade from the religion as an arrow goes through the game's body. They will kill the Muslims but will not disturb the idolaters. If I should live up to their time I will kill them as the people of `Aad were killed (i.e. I will kill all of them).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3344, 7432) and Saheeh Muslim (1769)]

Narrated Abu Sa`eed Al Khudree رضي الله عنه: I heard Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, “There will appear some people among you whose prayer will make you look down upon yours, and whose fasting will make you look down upon yours, but they will recite the Qur’aan which will not exceed their throats (they will not act on it) and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out through the game whereupon the archer would examine the arrowhead but see nothing, and look at the unfeathered arrow but see nothing, and look at the arrow feathers but see nothing, and finally he suspects to find something in the lower part of the arrow.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3610, 4351, 5058, 6163, 6931, 7432, 7562) and Saheeh Muslim (1770, 1771)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#12b

Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما narrated: “When the Harooriyyah (the Khawaarij) rebelled, they isolated themselves in a place. There were 6000 of them and they were united in rebelling against `Alee.

Continuously people would come to `Alee and say: “O Leader of the Believers! Verily these people are rebelling against you.”

He would reply: “Leave them; verily I will not fight them until they fight me and that is what they will do.”

So when it came to that day, I came to `Alee before the noon prayer and I said to him: “O Leader of the Believers! Delay the prayer until it is cooler perhaps I will speak to these people.”

He said: “Verily, I fear for you.”

I said: “Never! I used to be known as a man of good manners, I never harmed anyone.”

He gave me permission to go. So, I put on a very nice garment, the best of what one could get from Yemen and I combed my hair. Then, I visited them at midday while they were eating.

I had entered upon a people, the likes of whom I had never seen with regards to their exertion in worship. Their foreheads were wounded due to (constant) prostration (in prayer) and their hands had become rough like camels’ feet, wearing recently washed, untidy shirts with very high raised clothing and with tired and worn out faces (due to not caring for themselves).

So, I greeted them and they said: “Welcome, O son of `Abbaas! And what is this cloak you are wearing?”

I asked: “What deficiency do you see from me? Indeed, I saw the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم dressed in the best of what you can find in Yemeni clothing, and then I recited this verse:

{Say: “Who has forbidden the adornment of Allaah which He has produced for His servants and the good things of provision?”} [Surah al-A`raaf (7):32]

Then they asked, “What has brought you here?”
I told them: “I have come to you from amongst the Companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم – the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar and from the son of the uncle of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (`Alee), who is his son-in-law. And upon them descended the Qur’aan; they are more knowledgeable about it than you and there is not one of them (the companions) amongst you. I have come to convey to you what they say, and to convey to them what you say.”

A group amongst them said: “Do not debate with the Quraysh because verily Allaah تعالى says:

{Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people.} [Surah al-Zukhruf (43):58]

Then a group of them turned towards me and two or three of them said: “Verily, we will speak to him.”

So I said: “Come forward, what is the grudge you have against the Companions of the Allaah’s Messenger and the son of his uncle (`Alee)?”

They answered: “Three points.”

I asked: “And what are they?”

They said: “One of the points is that he (`Alee) had men judge in a matter of Allaah while Allaah says:

{The judgment is for none but Allaah.} [Surah al-An`aam (6):57 and Surah Yusuf (12):40, 67]

“What have men got to do with the judgment?”

I said: “This is one point.”

They said: “As for the second point, then he fought and he did not take captives nor did he take the war booty. If they were disbelievers, then their captives are permissible for us and if they were believers then their captives are neither permissible to take nor was it allowed to fight them (in the first place).”

I said: “This is the second point, and what is the third point?” Or he said something similar.
They said: “He removed the title of ‘Leader of the Believers’ (Ameer al-Mu’mineen), and so, if he is not the ‘Leader of the Believers’ then he is the ‘Leader of the Disbelievers’ (Ameer al-Kaafireen).”

I asked, “Do you have any points other than these?”

They replied, “These are sufficient for us.”

I said to them: “Do you understand that if I read to you from the book of Allaah تعالى and from the Sunnah of His Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that which refutes what you say, will you then return (back)?”

They said, “Yes.”

I said: “As for your statement that `Alee had men judge in a matter that was for Allaah; then I will read to you from the book of Allaah, where Allaah has delegated His judgment to men regarding the eighth of a quarter of a dirham. Allaah تعالى commanded the people to judge in this matter.

Do you not understand the saying of Allaah تعالى:

{O you who Believe! Do not kill the game while you are in a state of Ihraam, and whosoever of you kills it intentionally, then the penalty is an offering equivalent to the one he killed, as judged by two just men among you.} [Surah al-Maa’idah (5):95]

And it is from the judgment of Allaah that He delegated men to judge in this matter. If Allaah willed, He could have judged in this matter but He allowed men to judge.

I ask you by Allaah, is it better that men judge in something regarding reconciliation in disputes and in preventing bloodshed or regarding the hunting of a rabbit?”

They said, “Of course, this is better.”

“And regarding a woman and her husband (Allaah says):

{If you fear a breach between the husband and wife, appoint two arbitrators: one from his family and the other from hers.} [Surah al-Nisaa’ (4):35]
“Is not men judging in reconciling disputes and in the prevention of bloodshed better than men judging regarding the private parts of a woman? Have we finished with this point?”

They replied: “Yes.”

I said: “As for your statement: ‘He (`Alee) fought but did not take captives and did not take war booty,’ then would you take your mother (in Islaam), `Aaishah, as a captive, making her permissible for yourselves for that which you make permissible from other than her while she is your mother? If you say: ‘We make permissible from her that which we make permissible from other than her,’ then you have committed disbelief. And if you say: “She is not our mother,” then you have also committed disbelief:

{The prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers.} [Surah al-Ahzaab (33):6]

“And so you are between the two ill judgments. So, which of them do you want to take? Have we finished with this point?”

They replied, “Yes.”

“As for `Alee removing the title of ‘Leader of Believers’, then I will give you something that will please you; verily, the Prophet of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم contracted an agreement with the Mushrikeen (the disbelievers of Quraysh) on the Day of Hudaybiyyah, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to `Alee:

“Write, O `Alee: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allaah, agrees with.”

They, the Mushrikeen, said: ‘If we knew you to be the Messenger of Allaah, we would not have fought you.’ So the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“O Allaah! Indeed You know that I am Your Messenger. Erase it, `Alee, and write: This is what Muhammad Ibn `Abdullaah agrees upon.”

“I swear by Allaah that the messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم is better than `Alee and even he erased his own name, and erasing his name does not erase his prophet-hood.
Have we finished with this point?”

They said, “Yes.”

So 2,000 of them came back while the rest of them rebelled and fought, based upon their misguidance, and the Muhajiroon and Ansaar fought them.

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#13

Narrated Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه: A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asking how the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم worshipped (Allaah), and when they were informed about that, they considered their worship insufficient and said, “Where are we from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم as his past and future sins have been forgiven.” Then one of them said, “I will offer the prayer throughout the night forever.” The other said, “I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast.” The third said, “I will keep away from the women and will not marry forever.” Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم came to them and said, “Are you the same people who said so-and-so? By Allaah, I am more submissive to Allaah and more afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women. So he who does not follow my tradition in religion, is not from me (not one of my followers).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5063) and Saheeh Muslim (2495)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#14

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The Last Hour will not come until some groups of my nation attach themselves to the polytheists and some of my people worship idols.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4252); Ibn Majah (3952); and Tirmidhi (2219) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The Last Hour will not came until women from the daws tribe wiggle their buttocks (as they circumambulate) around the temple of the idol al-Khalasa.” [Saheehal-Bukhaaree (7116) and Saheeh Muslim (6944)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#15

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: I heard Allaah’s Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: “The (system) of night and day would not end until the people have taken to the worship of Laat and `Uzza (the two pagan gods from the Jaahiliyah).” I said: Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم I think when Allaah has revealed this verse: {He it is Who has sent His Messenger with right guidance, and true religion, so that He may cause it to prevail upon all religions, though the polytheists are averse (to it)} [Surah al-Tawbah (9): 33], it implies that (this promise) is going to be fulfilled. Thereupon he (Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “It would happen as Allaah would like. Then Allaah would send the sweet fragrant air by which everyone who has even a mustard grain of faith in Him would die and those only would survive who would have no goodness in them. And they would revert to the religion of their forefathers.” [Saheeh Muslim (5178)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#16

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “You will follow the practices of your predecessors, inch by inch and yard by yard; so that if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would also follow them.” When the Prophet was asked if he meant the Jews and Christians , he replied “If not them, who else?” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3456, 7320) and Saheeh Muslim (6448)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#17

Narrated Jaabir ibn `Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما: that he heard Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: “Verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence/leniency of prayer.” [Muslim (120), Tirmidhee (2618, 2620), al-Nasai’ (464), Abu Dawood (4678), Ibn Maajah (1078)]

Islaam between abandonment (negligence/leniency) and extremism...#18

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the nights.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (38)]
